Laser-Based Micropipette Puller

P3K

The P3K is the most versatile micropipette puller on the market, representing over 50 years of expertise in advanced micropipette fabrication. Engineered to handle glass of virtually any composition across a wide range of outer diameters, it is an essential tool for modern laboratories.

Bidirectional Laser Scanning

The P3K features innovative X/Y laser scanning technology that enables precise control over tip geometry and concentricity. By scanning the laser both horizontally and vertically, users can tune the amount of reflected radiation to suit pipettes of any starting outer diameter between 0.35 and 2.0 mm. The horizontal scan allows programmatic control over the amount of glass mobilized during pipette formation, providing access to a wide range of potential tip geometries without the need to exchange heating elements.

Versatile Puller Bars

A nearly universal glass carriage and optical path allow the P3K to work with starting materials ranging from 0.35 to 2.0 mm outer diameter without any optical path adjustments. This eliminates the need for multiple instrument models based on glass diameter. For applications requiring optical fiber or materials with outer diameters below 0.35 mm, special puller bars are available.

Advanced User Interface

The P3K utilizes a highly responsive multi-point capacitive touchscreen, powered by a single-board computer. The interface features an intuitive file system allowing users to create and store programs in folders for individuals or unique applications. Folders and programs are named using an on-screen keyboard, and programs can be duplicated within or between folders. The P3K also comes preprogrammed with Sutter-developed programs that can be used as templates. The UI software is field-upgradable, with periodic updates available on the Sutter website.

Increased Laser Power

The P3K is a Class 1 laser product incorporating an enclosed, embedded Class 4, 10.6-micron CO₂ laser module with 15 W of available power. This enables the puller to work capillary glass of essentially any chemical composition, including quartz, fused silica, borosilicate, aluminosilicate, and soda-lime glass. The laser has no melting point limit as with conventional metal filaments and therefore cannot be burned out. With regular use, the laser is expected to operate for more than 10 years before refurbishment.

  • Capable of pulling quartz, borosilicate and aluminosilicate glass.
  • X/Y laser scanning allows for generation of a wide variety of pipette geometries while maintaining tip concentricity.

  • Improved pipette carriage and optical systems allow for use of starting materials with outer diameters between 0.35 and 2.0 mm.

  • Improved user interface simplifies program development and storage.

  • The laser has no melting point limit as with conventional metal filaments; and therefore, cannot be burned out.
  • Pulls electrodes with tip diameters smaller than 0.03µm.
  • Intuitive and responsive capacitive touchscreen user interface.

  • 15 W CO2 laser generates sufficient energy to work glass starting materials of any chemical composition.

  • Optimized velocity sensing circuit for maximized sensitivity and reproducibility.
  • Operating life of the CO2 laser in excess of ten years with normal use, after which the laser can be refurbished by the Sutter Instrument Company for a nominal charge.
  • Individual programs can be write-protected in order to secure them from inadvertent changes.
  • Ideal for applications such as nanospray and NSOM.
  • Preprogrammed sample programs for intra-cellular and patch pipettes.
